This church was in operation from 1863 until April of 2014. It has been named as one of Canada’s Historic Places, and the Wellington Street building is currently under the protection of the city.

The church was constructed from 1862-1863, and it was the second oldest Anglican Church in London Ontario. The ministry and the congregation of St. Paul’s Cathedral paid for the new church. It was designed and built by London architect William Robinson who designed Presbyterian churches.

The church was made in High Victorian Gothic style. Some of its most prominent features were the white brick exterior, the hip roof, lancet windows, and arched doors. The church also contained three original stained glass windows from 1863. An addition was added to the building in 1879. Unfortunately a fire destroyed the interior on the west side of the building in 1962, though the structure was left intact.

Christ Anglican Church held a lot of significance to the London community. Many of Western University’s Anglican ministers practiced at the church, and the Anglican ministers held meetings and masses here. The first registrar of Western was actually a minister at this church.

Unfortunately the church was forced to close its doors after Easter 2014 due to lack of parishioners. There are plans to keep the building, and perhaps turn it over to another religious groups, though no plans have been finalized.
